Starretts

This unusual modernist house in Chislehurst, designed in 1962 by architect Norman Starrett, has a redwood-lined first floor living room styled by Terence Conran, his first project. CB were brought in to update the interiors, while adding a cantilevered study and garage element to the west elevation.

The kitchen/dining room on the ground floor (the former party room) was opened up to the garden terrace and features a terrazzo floor and a bay window/reading niche. Fold-down beds were added to the Study and Play room for the occasional visits of the extended family. External terraces at each level with connecting stairs provide an outside circulation route, while the garden was given a full re-design by Del Buono Gazerwitz.

Starretts was featured in House & Garden in 1962 and the magazine revisited the updated home in its October 2019 edition.

We had a fantastic experience working with Charles. He took the time to really listen to our needs and was incredibly patient with the changes we wanted to make throughout the project. What impressed us most was his sensitivity to the mid-century character of our home. He carefully preserved its original features while introducing a modern design that complemented the house beautifully.

We couldn’t be happier with the result and would highly recommend Charles and his studio to anyone looking for a thoughtful, creative, and talented architect.
